AMERICAN OPTIMISM: FINDING OUR WAY IN TROUBLED TIMES
One of the fundamental qualities of our democracy has been its forward-looking sense of optimism, hope, and evolving toward the better. In these politically fractious times, finding civil discourse presents its challenges. These journalists and writers discuss how their work chronicles America at its best. Jason Berry’s City of a Million Dreams celebrates New Orleans’ history; Douglas Brinkley’s American Moonshot: John F. Kennedy and the Great Space Race is the story of that most optimistic act, the space program, while Elizabeth Schwartz works tirelessly in the struggle for LGBTQ rights. Moderated by Fresh Air’s Maureen Corrigan, author of So We Read On: How The Great Gatsby Came to Be and Why It Endures.
