TAKE ME AWAY: CELEBRATING A SENSE OF PLACE

Readers rely on books to transport them to places they fantasize about, places they hope to see, and sometimes to celebrate the places they know well. These panelists shine with their knowledge of setting: in Acid West, Josh Wheeler takes us to southern New Mexico and the post nuclear-test landscape; Silas House (Southernmost) and Hannah Pittard (Visible Empire) explore the complexities of the modern South; Robert Olen Butler’s most recent work explores the City of Light in 1915 in Paris in the Dark. Malka Older draws on her experience in Darfur, Central Asia and Japan to create the beleaguered world of the near future in her cyberpunk political thrillers in The Centenal Cycle. Moderated by David Benedetto of WRBH.
