Few novels have captured the exuberance, excesses, and idiosyncrasies of New Orleans as John Kennedy Toole’s rollicking Pulitzer Prize-winning A Confederacy of Dunces. As we look forward to the 40th anniversary of its publication in 2020, the reading group will take up this modern classic, eyeing it anew from 21st Century perspectives. Attendees are invited to read (or reread) this sprawling picaresque novel and assess how Toole deftly parodies religion, race, gender, sexuality, and politics in his native city in the 1950s and 60s.
