Annell López Interview

Interview with TWFest 2025 Very Short Fiction Judge, Annell López

By Reine Dugas

What is it about a story that first captures your interest?

I love feeling grounded right from the start. I love a great opening that wastes no time. I appreciate it when a writer drops me in the middle of the story’s conflict.

What are you always happy to see in a short story? (a symbol, theme, place, literary device)

I’m always happy when I read a story in which the writer’s authority is noticeable. I love it when I can feel the writer’s confidence. I also love stories in which the writer makes the most of the setting, and I feel like I truly understand where the story takes place.

What advice do you have for new writers?

Read everything. Don’t be afraid to experiment and play around. And when it’s time to revise, don’t be afraid to take risks. Keep experimenting. Keep playing. Try your best to have fun.

What have you been reading lately?

I recently read Season of the Swamp by Yuri Herrera. It is an unforgettable book that reimagines the 18 months Benito Juarez spent in New Orleans.

How would you describe the New Orleans writing scene/community?

Our writing community is kind, generous, and fun. I’ve met many wonderful people who have championed my work and supported me as a writer. There’s no community like New Orleans.

How can writers connect with other writers here in the city?

There is so much happening in the city! Literary events and readings are great places to meet other writers and make connections. Many wonderful literary organizations host workshops, readings, and other fun events.

Can you tell us about what you’re working on now?

I’m working on a novel. It’s an expansion of “Bear Hunting Season,” a short story in my collection. The novel is about a young and peculiar widow and the people she meets in her grief group.
